Son of a Witch is the second novel in Gregory Maguire's The Wicked Years. Liir, the protagoinst of the story, is not a conventional storybook hero, being filled with self-doubt. The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy Gale, and Toto appear in the second novel of The Wicked Years. Gregory Maguire returns to the land of Oz to follow the story of Liir, an adolescent boy left. Wicked starts off well enough, with the birth of the Wicked Witch of the West to an ordinary enough family, with a bored, unfaithful heiress as a mother, and a stiff boore of a minister as a father. The story quickly deviates from the expected with its exploration of adult themes, ribald humour, and extensive political commentary.

David’s newest book “a sequel to Mamet’s first polemic, The Wicked Son“ "In a sense, the book is a sequel to Mamet's first polemic, "The Wicked Son," a study of "anti-Semitism, self-hatred and the Jews." But where "The Wicked Son" is a wounded cry, "The Secret Knowledge" is a work of liberation." Continue reading →. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY The death of Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, brings about spectacular changes in this masterfully imaginative sequel to Maguire's blockbuster Wicked most notably, the startling possibility that Elphaba had a son.

Wicked Years Ser.: Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire (, Trade Paperback) out of 5 stars () Total Ratings   Contrary to the wise son, the wicked son does question. He is curious and asks thoughtful questions. He has a desire to want to learn more. Instead of passively staring at his books all day, he engages in conversation. Some may see this questioning as being judgmental in some way, but I see it as being : Ada Perlman.

“Like everything Mamet does, [ The Wicked Son] is blunt and bracing, honest and provocative, original and gutsy.” – The New York Times Book Review “Rare among the defenders of the Jews–and of Judaism– Mamet recognizes the romance in the story of his ancient religion and race, and finds the words beautiful enough to describe it.”4/4(46).

David Mamet's "The The Wicked Son book Son" is an interesting condemnation of modern, "social Jewery" (self-identifying Jews who don't practice the religion).

Where many modern Jews see a lack of spirituality in Judaism, Mamet sees a lack of spirituality (and faith and pride and self-respect) in modern Jews/5. His first two novels, "The Seclusion Room," published by Viking Press and "Maneuvers," published by Dial Press received international acclaim in the five countries in which they were published.4/5(1).

Son of a Witch- This tale overlaps with Wicked and follows Liij, a boy many think is the son of Elphaba, as he It is a book for adults with swear words, violence and sex (tastefully done). I enjoyed the story and the spin one can take from a classic tale/5.

The Wicked Years continue in Gregory Maguire’s Son of a Witch—the heroic saga of the hapless yet determined young man who may or may not be the offspring of the fabled Wicked Witch of the West.A New York Times bestseller like its predecessor, the remarkable Wicked, Son of a Witch follows the boy Liir on his dark odyssey across an ingeniously re-imagined and nearly unrecognizable /5().

The Wicked Years is a series of novels by Gregory Maguire that present a revisionist take on L.

Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, its film adaptation, and related books. This is a very different and cynical look at Oz as is seen in the books by L. Frank Baum or the film(s). Unlike the originals, these books are not intended for children. Liir Thropp (pronounced [leer]) is a key character in The Wicked Years series by Gregory Maguire, appearing in all four novels.

He is the son of Elphaba Thropp and the main protagonist of the second book Son of a Witch, published in Liir's heritage is in doubt throughout the novels, but it is definite that he is the illegitimate son of Elphaba, and her lover, Prince Fiyero Tigelaar.

The author ranks as one of my favorite. Amazing storytelling. Such depth in his characters/5(). Also by David Mamet See all books by David Mamet.Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (not to be confused with a creepy Australian kids' book series), a novel by Gregory Maguire, is the story of Elphaba, who will one day become that Wicked Witch of the West.

The original novel was expanded into a four book series entitled The Wicked Years. Son of a Witch revolves around Elphaba's possible son Liir, A Lion Among Men.Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view.

More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil. Elphaba is born with green skin, a precocious mind, and a talent for magic.
